Bill Acharjee

Black Members Officer, UNISON & Trustee & EDI Lead, SoCo Music Project

Bill Acharjee is a musician, equality advocate, and education professional committed to creating more inclusive and accessible creative spaces. Alongside his work in higher education, he has been actively involved in the independent music scene for many years as a bass player, performing in bands including Dead! Dead! Dead!, The Diamond Age, and Woven Bird.

Bill’s work sits at the intersection of music, equity, and community, with a particular focus on improving representation and access within creative industries and education. He works as an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Advisor at the University of Brighton, is a UNISON Black Members Officer, and serves as a Trustee and EDI Lead for SoCo Music. Across these roles, he supports initiatives that promote belonging, fairness, and opportunity, helping organisations move beyond intention toward meaningful cultural change.

He is passionate about challenging structural barriers that prevent people from participating fully in music culture, whether as performers, audiences, or industry professionals, and is especially interested in how grassroots music communities, universities, and industry partners can collaborate to build more sustainable and diverse creative ecosystems.

Bill believes that music scenes thrive when they are values-driven, community-led, and genuinely inclusive, and that everyone benefits when creativity reflects the full diversity of society.
